David Steffen, DrPH, has been named Director of the Leadership MPH concentration in the Public Health Leadership Program (PHLP). In his new position, Dr. Steffen will oversee both the distance and residential components of the Leadership Program, including the Public Health Nursing track. His faculty appointment will be Clinical Assistant Professor of Public Health Leadership, with teaching and advising responsibilities.In announcing his appointment, Dr. William Sollecito, Director of the Public Health Leadership Program, praised Dr. Steffen’s extensive experience as a leader and practitioner in public health. Dr. Steffen served as a District Health Director for the state of New Mexico from 1988 to 2001, at which time he also had an adjunct assistant professor appointment in the Health Science Department at New Mexico State University. In 2001, Dr. Steffen was named Director of the Public Health Leadership Institute (PHLI), a national program for public health leaders that is run by the North Carolina Institute of Public Health, in partnership with the Kenan-Flagler Business School and the Center for Creative Leadership. He was also appointed as a clinical assistant professor in Public Health Nursing at UNC.

Dr. Steffen received an MSN from the Community Health Nursing Department of the School of Nursing at Yale University and an MPH in Health Administration from Yale. In 2000, he earned a Doctor of Public Health from the UNC Department of Health Policy and Administration, through the Public Health Leadership Program.

In his new position, Dr. Steffen will be the team leader for the Distance Education team in PHLP and will represent the program on school-wide Distance Education committees and issues. He will also take charge of many of the administrative responsibilities of the Leadership MPH concentration that were formerly managed by Saundra Shay, who will continue as a part-time faculty member in PHLP and as the manager of the Public Health Nursing Track.
