Dr. Shu Wen Ng is a health economist interested in studying the role of dietary change and shifts in physical activity patterns in weight gain among those experiencing rapid economic and social change. She has done work in China, Mexico, and in the Middle East and is interested in studying populations where people who may have previously had limited access to food and other services are suddenly experiencing improved economic opportunities that provide the possibility for new diets or luxuries. Some of her work involves investigated the basis for using food pricing policies to influence dietary consumption, and how people and households spend time in food-related or physical activities across all domains of daily living. She is currently part of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded research team that is evaluating the food industry’s commitment to cut calories from the US marketplace, with a special focus on potential health outcomes for American children. Dr. Ng has extensive modeling experience with multi-level and instrumental variable models, survival analysis/ hazard modeling, propensity scoring, time-series and dynamic panel estimation analyses.
