On October 1, 2005, Paul Buescher will become the new Director of the State Center for Health Statistics. Paul began work at the State Center in 1980 as a Statistician, and has increasingly taken on management and leadership roles over the last 25 years. Since 1993 he has served as the Head of the Statistical Services Unit. Having spent most of his career at the State Center, Paul is intimately familiar with its programs and is highly committed to its ongoing success and improvement.Paul is an Eagle Scout, who received his undergraduate degree in Sociology from Louisiana State University. He went on to receive a Master of Arts in Sociology and a Ph.D. in Sociology/Demography from UNC Chapel Hill. He has been an MCH Department Adjunct faculty member since 1991.

Paul is an accomplished scholar who has published extensively in the medical and public health literature. Since 1999, he has been the Editor of -Running the Numbers, a regular column in the North Carolina Medical Journal to inform North Carolina physicians and their patients about current topics in health statistics. He was Recipient of the National 2004 Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Award for Effective Practice at the State Level.

The UNC Department of MCH looks forward to continuing to work closely with Dr. Buescher in his leadership role as the new Director.
