Research activities

Dr. Koruda’s research involves nutritional support of the hospitalized patient and the effect of critical illness on the gastrointestinal tract. His recent research projects have investigated the effects of alcohol on the small bowel mucosa, the barrier function of the gut and immune suppression. He is also investigating permeability. He has co-authored texts on clinical management and assessment of nutrition in the hospitalized patient. Dr. Koruda is the chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals as well as associate director of the Nutrition Support Service. Dr. Koruda is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society and the Ravdin-Rhoads Surgical Society. Dr. Koruda is the recipient of the Harry M. Vars Research Award (1985), the Stanley Dudrick Research Scholar Award (1988) from the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and is co-investigator for the American College of Clinical Pharmacy-Glaxo-Pharmacotherapy Research Award (1990).
