Research Activities

Ms. Sommers is a Clinical Assistant Professor and long-time public health practitioner at community and state health departments. She is interested in bridging the gap between research and practice in the areas of nutrition, physical activity, obesity and chronic disease prevention. She is the director of the Center for Training and Research Translation (Center-TRT) at the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The Center TRT is funded by the Centers for Disease Control to identify, review, package and disseminate evidence-informed interventions to public health practitioners, and to provide training on evidence-based practice. Ms. Sommers teaches graduate courses in public health nutrition management that cover community assessment, program planning and evaluation, and program management and administration. She works primarily with students enrolled in the master’s programs who concentrate in public health nutrition practice.
