Research activities

Dr. Switzer is a nutritional biochemist interested in nutrition and cancer. Current research includes: a) relationship of antioxidant vitamins and carotenoids to dietary intake and cancer risk, b) relationship of phytochemicals and fat subtype to prostate cancer, and c) biomarkers of dietary adherence and fiber intake. Dr. Switzer is the principal investigator and co-investigator of projects studying the relationship of phytochemicals, fat subtype and flaxseed components on human prostate cancer. He has studied the effect of diet and energy intake on human lymphoid leukemia among men in 24 counties. Dr. Switzer has observed the effect of diet, growth, hormone and insulin-like growth factor on leukemia incidence in Fischer rats. He has studied diet-blood relationships of carotenoids in African Americans and other populations. Dr. Switzer teaches courses in nutrition and cardiovascular disease, nutritional metabolism and introduction to medical nutrition. He also places graduate students in public health/nutrition field experiences. Dr. Switzer is a member of the American Society for Nutrition, the American Society of Preventive Oncology and the American College of Nutrition.
