The Public Health Leadership Program (PHLP) held its annual award ceremony in conjunction with the Foard Lecture on Friday, April 20. The awards were presented by Faculty following a brief presentation on the growth and successes of the PHLP over the past year by Program Director Dr. Bill Sollecito.

Mary Jane “Janie” Benson was the recipient of the Arnold Kaluzny Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Benson, a graduate of the DrPH program in Maternal and Child Health and Public Health Leadership, was cited for her leadership and service, both as a student and in her professional work as Vice President for Research and Evaluation for Ipas, the leading international non-profit organization dedicated to protecting women’s health and advancing reproductive rights. Dr. Benson provided some comments on lessons learned in the course of her studies and her subsequent professional work. The Rachel Stevens Scholarship for Public Health Leadership was awarded to Rachel Farmer Smith, a public health nurse in rural Madison County, North Carolina who serves as the county’s Child Service Coordinator and is currently completing her first year in the PHLP’s Distance MPH program. Her experience and service were applauded by Rachel Stevens, Emeritus Director and founder of the PHLP, who joined Dr. Sollecito to present the award. Sue Randolph, of the PHLP’s Occupational Health Nursing Concentration, announced the winners of the two scholarships. The Margaret Blee-Ruth Warwick Hay Award went to Kathy T. Dayvault, and the Imogene Pence Klingenfus Award was given to Shelly A. Johnson, both of whom have distinguished themselves in the OHN Concentration. Other awards included the Theta Chapter Service award, given to Dr. John Anderson in recognition of his efforts to establish a public health clinic in Ecuador, and the Theta Chapter Award for Academic Excellence, given to Shauna Hay. Dr. Sollecito also announced the new inductees to Delta Omega, the honorary academic fraternity. The students, 2007 graduates recognized for outstanding academic achievement, are William Huang, Lori Carswell, Serena Tsai, Carol Haggerty, Ashley Champion, Beverly Warden, Jill Connell, and Kit Nichols. |
