Dr. Jonathan Oberlander

Jonathan B. Oberlander, PhD, has been promoted to the rank of professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and in the Department of Social Medicine at UNC School of Medicine, effective March 1.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science from UNC in 1989, Oberlander earned two master’s degrees and a doctorate from Yale University, all in political science. He joined the UNC social medicine faculty as assistant professor in 1997 and the UNC health policy and management faculty as associate professor in 2006. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the UNC Department of Political Science and research fellow at UNC’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research.

Oberlander’s skills as a speaker and analyst are widely sought. He has presented more than 100 papers and invited talks since joining the UNC faculty, including the public health school’s 2008 Fred T. Foard Memorial Lecture. He also has participated in a number of radio and television interviews, particularly to comment on issues related to health care policy. He twice has won the UNC School of Medicine’s Teaching Excellence Award (in 2003 and 2004).

“Dr. Oberlander is nationally acclaimed for his work on Medicare and health care reform,” said Peggy Leatt, PhD, chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management and associate dean for academic affairs at the School.

“He has been widely recognized for his outstanding analyses of President Obama’s health care reform legislation and of numerous other health policy issues, as indicated by his contributions to Health Affairs and The New England Journal of Medicine, two journals with the highest impact in our field.”
