Panel I: Building and Maintaining Healthy Lifestyles

The costs of unhealthy lifestyles burden employers and taxpayers. The steady increase in childhood obesity rates, and parallel rise of associated health care costs, have led well-resourced groups to innovate and implement new programs aimed at building healthier communities. Private companies are teaming up with public and government entities to influence larger, more diverse groups of people to embrace healthier lifestyles. Companies are exploring incentivized versus punitive health care premium systems, and more attention is being paid to reaching children in an effort to instill healthy habits early in life. Technology companies have emerged as important contributors, with digital technologies such as electronic patient records playing a key role in helping stakeholders understanding which strategies work best. How can the public and private sectors best work together to maximize these efforts for better community health? What anecdotal examples and existing data is available to show how such programs can make communities healthier? <div”>
