P is for Practice

nciph-pforpracticeUpdated in 2016, P is for Practice is a case study-based training series developed by the North Carolina Institute for Public Health to allow non-epidemiologists to practice basic epidemiology skills and public health concepts, including:

  • Outbreak investigation
  • Risk communication
  • Vulnerable populations
  • Common epidemiological study designs
  • Evidence-based decision making

The facilitator’s guidebook contains realistic scenarios and case studies that you can use to practice basic epidemiology and investigation skills learned in the first two parts of the training series, E is for Epidemiology and I is for Investigation.

The case studies are designed to be used for computer-based self-study, as a face-to-face teaching tool for trainers, or for lunch and learn seminars or in-service trainings.  Each case study contains an outbreak scenario with detailed speaker’s notes, guided discussion questions for individuals or groups, and additional resources.  Each case study should take about 90-120 minutes to complete.
