An engaging interview with David Murdock appears in the Jan.2009 issue of The Costco Connection. Murdock, billionaire real estate developer and owner of Dole Food Company, Inc., is the driving force behind creation of the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, N.C., where the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Nutrition Research Institute is located. The research campus, a 350-acre complex with more than a million square feet of lab and office space, is a private-public venture created to foster collaboration and further advancements in the fields of biotechnology, nutrition and health. The UNC Nutrition Research Institute is housed on the campus in a 125,000-square-foot building that will include a metabolic kitchen, clinical facilities, a cognitive assessment suite, state-of-the-art laboratories and spacious work area. Steven Zeisel, MD, PhD, Kenan Distinguished Professor of nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, directs the NRI.
