Maternal and Child Health adjunct faculty member to lead N.C. State Center for Health Statistics

| Dr. Paul Buescher, maternal and child health adjunct faculty member in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health, will become the new director of the North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics, effective October 1. The center is part of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.Buescher began work at the center in 1980 as a statistician, and over the last 25 years, has increasingly taken on management and leadership roles. He has served as the head of the Statistical Services Unit since 1993.
An accomplished scholar who has published extensively in the medical and public health field, Buescher has been editor, since 1999, of “Running the Numbers,” a regular column of the North Carolina Medical Journal. The journal, directed toward physicians and patients, covers current topics in health statistics. Buescher was additionally the recipient of the 2004 National Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Award for Effective Practice at the state level. The award — given by the Coalition for Excellence in MCH Epidemiology (which represents 15 national public health organizations) — recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions toward improving the health of women, children and families through epidemiology, applied research, and the effective use of data. Buescher earned an undergraduate degree in sociology from Louisiana State University, and a Master of Arts in sociology and doctorate in sociology/demography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
