Dr. James Marks

James S. Marks, MD, MPH, senior vice president and director of the health group at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will present a lecture on April 9 at 1 p.m. in the Rosenau Hall auditorium at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The talk is part of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s 2010 Dean’s Lecture Series. A reception will follow.

Prior to joining the Foundation in 2004, Marks directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. During a decade of work at CDC, Marks developed and advanced systematic ways to prevent and detect diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, reduce tobacco use and address the nation’s growing epidemic of obesity.

His work with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is focused on childhood obesity, public health and vulnerable populations.

“Jim Marks is one of the most visionary, articulate public health leaders in the field today,” said Leah Devlin, DDS, Gillings Visiting Professor and former North Carolina Health Director. “I encourage everyone to come listen to him and ask questions about his exciting ideas.”

Born in Buffalo, New York, Marks received a Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Buffalo and trained as a pediatrician at the University of California at San Francisco. He was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Yale University, where he received his Master of Public Health degree.

A national leader and public health advocate for more than 25 years, Marks has received numerous federal, state and private awards, including distinguished service awards from the U.S. Public Health Service and the American Cancer Society and membership in the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences.

He has published extensively in the areas of maternal and child health and health promotion and chronic disease prevention and has served on many government and nonprofit committees devoted to improving the public’s health. For more information and to register, visit http://snipurl.com/DLS_Marks.
