In a video on the website, www.jfk50.org, Margolis says he always knew he wanted to make a contribution to medicine. He recalls being in medical school when the AIDS virus first appeared, having to face the mysterious and deadly virus that led him too often to patients’ funerals.

Now, even though his HIV-positive patients live for many years, Margolis is still trying to find a cure. His research is focused on the biology and virology of HIV and on translational science. Most recently, he has been investigating the use of cancer drugs to eradicate HIV from the body.

Jan. 20 marked the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s inauguration. The centerpiece of the anniversary celebration was the new website, which aims to engage America’s youth. Fifty years ago, Kennedy challenged the younger generation to serve as the nation’s standard bearers.
Margolis is featured in the site’s video mosaic legacy gallery showcasing people who are continuing Kennedy’s legacy in their respective fields.
