Dr. Lewis Margolis, associate professor of maternal and child health at the UNC School of Public Health, has been awarded nearly $900,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to lead a three-year study of the effects of interdisciplinary training on maternal and child health professionals, organizations and systems. Only one such grant was awarded nationwide.

The study will evaluate the impact of an interdisciplinary maternal and child health training model developed collaboratively by the UNC School of Public Health’s departments of maternal and child health and nutrition, the UNC School of Social Work, UNC Pediatric Dentistry and the UNC Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning.

Study co-investigators include Dr. Angela Rosenberg, director of training for the UNC Center for Development and Learning (LEND Program) and Dr. Karl Umble, planner and evaluator with the North Carolina Institute for Public Health.

“This grant further underscores the capacity of UNC to provide and assess public health education needed to cultivate and nurture the next generation of interdisciplinary leaders in maternal and child health,” Margolis said.
