The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is proud to announce ESE Assistant Professor, Marc Serre, has won the Newton Underwood Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Serre was appointed to ESE faculty in 2001. Student’s nomination comments included “Dr. Serre exhibits a teaching style that combines expertise, patience, and encouragement of independent thought.” “Possibly what sets him apart from his colleagues is not just the genuine intellectual curiosity, but the fact that he is willing to devote much of his time to sharing these thoughts with students. He is not only successful in providing a “tailored” intellectually stimulating classroom environment; he is also capable of being individually responsive to each student’s level of mathematical skills and knowledge.” Across the board, all the students who nominated Dr. Serre found his courses to be intellectually stimulating and challenging, and spoke of his commitment both inside and outside of the classroom to further students understanding of course material. Because of this, Dr. Serre is deserving of this Newton Underwood Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 1973 the Newton Underwood Memorial Award was initiated in memory of Dr. Newton Underwood to recognize his contributions to the teaching profession. The many students who knew the privilege of having Dr. Underwood as an instructor attributed his success as a teacher to his unique ability to stimulate the interest of his students and, in a personal manner, effectively convey his lecture material. The award is presented to faculty members of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering who exhibit the conscientious dedication to students and teaching typified by Newton Underwood.
