LaVange honored for outstanding contributions in COPD research

Dr. Lisa LaVange
Lisa LaVange, PhD, former professor of biostatistics and director of the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, will be recognized by the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Foundation in New York on Dec. 8 for her outstanding contributions in COPD research. LaVange left UNC in September and now serves as director of the office of biostatistics in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).
Other individuals and organizations to be honored at the event include physician and inventor Forrest Bird, MD, PhD, ScD, for distinguished scientific achievement; Medscape, for pioneering in health care professional education and awareness; and WebMD, for pioneering in patient advocacy, education and awareness; renowned artist Michael Kalish for a national awareness campaign; and NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, for her advocacy regarding COPD awareness.”These honorees exemplify the courage, spirit and leadership that will allow us to realize our ultimate mission – to identify all individuals at risk of and affected by COPD, improve their quality of life, and support the research that will lead to a cure,” said John Walsh, president and co-founder of the COPD Foundation.
