Ashley Kranz, health policy and management doctoral student at Gillings School of Global Public Health, has received the first-place Leverett Graduate Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dental Public Health.

Kranz will receive a cash award of $500 and travel costs to attend the National Oral Health Conference (NOHC). She will accept the award during the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Special Merit and Student Awards presentation at the NOHC in Huntsville, Ala., on April 22.

“I am honored to receive the Leverett Merit Award, which recognizes my dissertation research,” Kranz said. “My dissertation committee and, in particular, my dissertation chair and mentor, Gary Rozier, were extremely helpful and essential to the successful completion of my dissertation research. I am thrilled to be recognized by the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and plan to continue conducting research in this field.”

Kranz also will present her poster, “Comparative Effectiveness of Preventive Oral Health Services Provided in Medical and Dental Settings on Young Medicaid-enrolled Children,” during the conference.”I am thrilled that Ashley won this award and that her dissertation research will be recognized at the National Oral Health Conference,” said Gary Rozier, DDS, MPH, professor of health policy and management in the Gillings School and of dental ecology in the UNC School of Dentistry. “Ashley is providing an important evaluation of a statewide effort in North Carolina that reflects many public health principles including innovation, collaboration and data-driven solutions to a well-recognized problem.”

The National Oral Health Conference will be the 14th joint meeting between the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. More than 750 participants and 30 exhibitors are expected to attend over the five days of programming.
