Inaugural Gillings Student Organization Service Project Awards announced
January 14, 2011 | |
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and GlobeMed at UNC, two student organizations strongly affiliated with UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, have received the School’s first Gillings Student Organization Service Project Awards.
The awards provide funding support to student organizations at the School for innovative service projects that benefit communities in North Carolina and around the world. Recipients were selected by a committee of peers from the School’s Executive Council of Student Government. EWB’s project, “Sanitation System in Ciudad de Dios, Peru,” seeks to continue to build capacity in sanitation and water through an ongoing commitment to Ciudad de Dios. EWB members have supported Ciudad de Dios since 2006. GlobeMed at UNC’s “Health Alert – Uganda Frontline SMS: Medic Implementation” project will strengthen communications and HIV/AIDS data transmission between community volunteer counselors and Health Alert Uganda offices through the use of cell phone short message service (SMS). Each student organization will receive $2,500. The Gillings Student Organization Service Project Awards are made possible by a $50 million gift to the School from Dennis and Joan Gillings. The competitively selected awards will be offered each academic year. School-affiliated student service organizations that have formal recognition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are welcome to apply.
