Warpwire: Video Hosting in Sakai

What is Warpwire?

Warpwire is a video hosting tool available to use in any Sakai course site. It allows you to upload video files of just about any format into Sakai and share with anyone in your course. You can also create live and/or recorded webcam video. If you are using the Lessons tool, you can embed the video in any Lessons tool page.

The Warpwire Interface in Sakai

Why To Use It:

It is highly recommended that you use Warpwire for any video files you need to use in Sakai, rather than upload files directly into the Resources tool. Video content will be more accessible to students, easier to link to and embed, won’t be subject to the 200 MB individual file upload limit, and won’t count against your 2 GB site quota.

Warpwire is secured for access only to site members, so it offers better access protection than YouTube or other external video hosting tools.

Note: Under campus license, Warpwire is NOT available for Sakai special-request project sites, only regular course sites.

Our Warpwire Demo Video shows you how to add Warpwire to your site, upload a video, and then place the video in a Lessons tool page.

How To Add Warpwire:

  1. Go to Site Info and click on “Manage Tools”.
  2. Find Warpwire listed (near the bottom of the tools list), check it, and click “Continue”.
  3. On the next screen, click “Finish”. The Warpwire button should appear in your site left-hand navigation bar.

How To Upload a Video:

  1. Click on Warpwire in your Sakai site’s left-hand navigation menu.
  2. Click the Add button (labeled with a plus sign).
  3. Choose “Upload Files”.
  4. Select the video file from your computer.
  5. The video will upload and process and then be available for viewing.

How To Record Using a Webcam:

  1. Click on Warpwire in your Sakai site’s left-hand navigation menu.
  2. Click the Add button (labeled with a plus sign).
  3. Choose “Capture From Webcam” (make sure you have a webcam connected).
  4. You may be asked to allow Warpwire to access your webcam and your microphone. Grant access.
  5. You will then be able to begin recording video and audio content.
  6. When you have finished, you can preview the recording, give it an appropriate title, and save it.
  7. Once it has finished saving, it will be listed in Warpwire and shareable with other site members.

How To Embed Videos in the Lessons tool:

  1. Go to the Lessons tool page you want to add the video to.
  2. Click the “Add Content” button and choose “Add Text”.
  3. In the rich text editor at the top of the text box, find the “W” icon for Warpwire.
  4. A window will pop-up with all your Warpwire videos.
  5. Find and select the video you want to embed (you can also newly upload the video at this point).
  6. A thumbnail should appear in the textbox. Click the “Save” button.
  7. The video should now appear in the Lessons tool page.
  8. Use the “Reorder” button to move it to where you want it to appear.

A Note On Permissions:

If you embed Warpwire videos in the Lessons tool, the default permissions for the videos will NOT allow students to view them unless students have first clicked on the Warpwire button in the left-hand navigation. This “registers” them as site members. At the beginning of the semester, notify all students to click the Warpwire button at least once. Then access to any embedded videos will work fine throughout the semester.

How To Record Live Video:

  1. Click on Warpwire in your Sakai site’s left-hand navigation menu.
  2. Click the Add button (labeled with a plus sign).
  3. Choose “Live Broadcast” (make sure you have a webcam connected).
  4. Enter a title and optional description and click “Set Up Live Broadcast”
  5. You may be asked to allow Warpwire to access your webcam and your microphone. Grant access.
  6. Under “Share” you can get the URL to the live broadcast, and choose viewing permissions. Anyone accessing Warpwire in your site will also be able to see and click on the live video thumbnail.
  7. The video will be automatically recorded and saved to the Warpwire list in your site.

Other Features:

  • Analytics: You can get data on who has watched your Warpwire content. Access Warpwire, click the options menu for any video, and click the “Settings” option. Then click “View Analytics”. You’ll be able to see which students have viewed the video, how much of it they watched, and when. You can also download the viewing data to Excel.
  • Permissions: By default videos are only accessible to site members. You can change permissions for any video to institutional (anyone with an Onyen) or public (generally not recommended). Access Warpwire, click the options menu for any video, and click the “Share” option. Use the dropdown list to choose the appropriate option. To hide videos from students, choose the “myself and admins” option.
  • Copying: Any videos you’ve uploaded to one Sakai site can be copied to another. Access Warpwire, click the options menu for any video, and click the “Copy” option. Any other Sakai site you have instructor access to will be listed, and you can choose to copy to that site’s Warpwire list.
  • Batch Editing: If you need to copy, change permissions, add tags, etc., to multiple videos at once, use the “Batch Edit” option. Access Warpwire and click the Pencil icon. Then select the videos to apply the changes to, and choose your edits to make.
