Sarah Rutstein, doctoral candidate in health policy and management at the Gillings School of Global Public Health and medical student at UNC School of Medicine, has been awarded the Sherri Aversa Memorial Foundation’s 2013 Dissertation Award. Rutstein’s dissertation, “Optimizing HIV Therapy: Virological Monitoring, Adherence and Cost-Effectiveness,” examines opportunities to improve long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) outcomes using viral load (VL) monitoring among HIV-infected people in Sub-Saharan Africa.
She was given $3,000 in award funds.
“It is a real honor to be selected for this dissertation completion award,” Rutstein said. “These funds will support my in-country research expenses for fieldwork in Lilongwe, Malawi, this fall and will be essential as I explore opportunities and barriers to improve treatment monitoring for HIV-infected patients on therapy in resource-limited settings.”
The mission of the Aversa Foundation is to encourage young social and behavioral science researchers to continue Dr. Aversa’s work by helping them complete doctoral dissertation research focused on health care access, health behavior, or health care quality for those with HIV/AIDS and/or substance abuse disorders.
