HPM celebrates achievements at annual awards ceremony

Twenty-two students and alumni were honored on April 26 at the Department of Health Policy and Management’s annual award ceremony.Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) awards were handed out first. Melanie Studer, MHA, clinical instructor and director of the BSPH program, presented Kelly McFarlane with the AUPHA/McGaw Undergraduate Scholarship award, funded by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and awarded to members of the junior class.
The Gerald D. Studer award was presented to Shuaiqing Liu in recognition of exceptional motivation, work ethic, resourcefulness and personal sacrifice in pursuit of goals.
Camille McGirt and Todd Lewis were presented the James P. Dixon Award for Excellence in Education. Jim Dixon was an HPM faculty member from 1976 to 1995 who brought many years of experience in innovation to higher education. The award recognizes his distinguished career as well as his approach to education.
The HPM Arnold D. Kaluzny Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research was awarded to Shuaiqing Liu and Melissa Ashley-Marie Martinez.Bruce

The AUPHA/McGaw Master’s Scholar this year went to Corrie Brisson. This award is given to an outstanding first-year student nominated by instructors from the first-year core courses.
LeVelton Thomas received the Benjamin Rodin Scholarship, given to a graduate student with an interest in health services administration.
The Margaret Dardess and T.E. Smith Scholarship went to Jorge Villanueva Medina. This scholarship is given to a promising first-year or entering dual-degree student with the most promising future in health policy and management.
The Jean G. Yates Health Policy Award was presented to Ann Somers Wilton and Lauren Smeeding. The Yates Award is given to graduate students in health policy and management “who show the greatest promise and interest in health policy issues.”
The Clive Boxhill Jr. Scholarship in Health Policy Award was given to Jasmine Hutchinson. This new award is given to a student with an interest in health policy who has “dreams without means.”
The Davis-Watson Healthcare Management Scholarship is funded by North Carolina Medical Group Managers. Paige Coulter received this award for her academic performance, leadership potential and demonstrated promise for future contributions to healthcare management.

The final residential master’s award was presented to Amira Welch, who received the Mary Thompson Award for Outstanding Achievement.Jim Porto, PhD, clinical associate professor and director of the executive master’s programs, presented Alicia Stokes with the Jacob Koomen Public Health Practice Award. This award is given to an executive student who exemplifies Dr. Koomen’s commitment to public health.
Deus Mubangizi received the first Executive Doctoral Program in Health Leadership award, the Arthur B. Holzworth Endowed Scholarship in Health Leadership. This scholarship is provided to support the teaching, training and leadership development of an outstanding Doctor of Public Health student.
The Charles A. Veatch Endowed Scholarship in Health Leadership went to Koyejo Oyerinde.

was the recipient of the Deniese May Chaney Fellowship, given to a graduate student of high academic caliber who is pursuing health administration as a career goal.
The final Doctor of Public Health award, the Sandra B. Greene Scholarship in Health Leadership, went to Stephanie Watson-Grant, for exemplifying leadership and passion for improving health.Morris Weinberger, PhD, distinguished professor and director of doctoral programs, awarded Jeff Federspiel with the Jean G. Yates Outstanding Doctoral Student Award. This award is to recognize scholarship in health services research and contributions to the discipline.
Saleema Karim received the Harry T. Phillips Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Doctoral Student. Phillips was a faculty member from 1969 to 1983. The award recognizes a doctoral student for initiative and excellence in classroom teaching.The last award of the ceremony, the alumni leadership award, was presented by Sally Stearns, PhD, professor, to Pam Silberman, DrPH, clinical professor.
