WASH and essential environmental conditions in healthcare facilities, sponsored by UNICEF.
There will be two phases, and I will be involved in phase one, which will focus on the exploratory
literature reviews and development of cost-benefit model components. Key elements of this
phase include the development of search strategy, review of priority literature, short summaries of
key findings, and a recommendation for go/no-go on expanded literature reviews to inform a
larger model. The focus of the literature reviews will to examine the links between WaSH
interventions and healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). We will address questions such as
the impact of WaSH interventions on HCAIs, burden of HCAIs, causal links between
disinfection/cleaning interventions and HCAIs, and finding out which disease burden modeling
tools will be appropriate for measuring the impacts of WaSH interventions. These reviews will
allow for the development of an evidence-based cost-benefit model that will be used in

He would speak openly about his depression related to his disability caused by chronic heart failure. The student asked clinicians about depression related to chronic cardiovascular disease. Their personal accounts and the existing literature all seemed to suggest that comorbid depression was common, but the UNC cardiovascular clinic did not routinely refer patients for psychological consults. To aid in filling this gap, the student designed a study titled ""A Mixed Methods Exploration of the Social and Emotional Impact of Living with Heart Failure in an Outpatient Population"". The study involved quality of life questionnaires paired with semi-structured interviews.
