Shannon Murphy

Shannon Murphy, junior health policy and management major in the Bachelor of Science Public Health program at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, won second place recently in KaiserEDU.org’s 2012 Student Essay Contest.

The 150 undergraduate contest entrants were asked to identify an element of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and discuss its impact and implementation challenges. Students from a wide range of disciplines, including economics, nursing, medicine, public health and public policy, submitted entries.

Murphy received a $750 prize for her essay, “Healthcare Reform through Medicaid Expansion.”

“Shannon’s essay stood out as exceptionally insightful, thorough and well-researched,” said Alina Salganicoff, PhD, vice president and director of Women’s Health Policy for the Kaiser Family Foundation and director of KaiserEDU.org.

“We spent a lot of time talking about the Affordable Care Act in one of my health policy and management courses, so it was very cool to see what I have learned come together in the essay,” Murphy said. “Being recognized by Kaiser was an added bonus.”

Melanie Studer, MHSA, clinical instructor of health policy and management and the department’s program director for undergraduate students, said Murphy had written an “excellent” essay. “This is quite an honor for her,” Studer said, “and I am extremely proud.”
