Ka He, MD, ScD, has been promoted to associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology, with tenure, at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. The promotion is effective Sept. 1, 2009. “Dr. Ka He is a creative and talented researcher and a dedicated teacher,” says June Stevens, PhD, AICR/WCRF Distinguished Professor of nutrition and epidemiology and chair of the Department of Nutrition. “We are very fortunate to have him as one of our faculty.” Dr. He has been an assistant professor with the UNC departments since 2006 and is an adjunct professor with the Department of Nutrition in the School of Radiation Medicine and Public Health at Soochow University in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. He’s current research focuses on the food additive monosodium glutamate (MSG). “Animal studies have indicated for years that MSG might be associated with weight gain,” He says. “Ours is the first study to show a link between MSG use and weight in humans.” He holds a Doctor of Science in nutritional epidemiology from Harvard University, a medical degree from Soochow University and a Master of Public Health in epidemiology and biostatistics from Tufts University. Before coming to UNC, he was an assistant professor in Northwestern University’s Department of Preventive Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine and practiced as a general physician and medical specialist in Beijing, China. He is a fellow of the American Heart Association and American College of Nutrition.
