Apply to the Health Care and Prevention Program

Thank you for your interest in the Health Care and Prevention (HC&P) MPH program!  Applications to the Health Care and Prevention MPH concentration are accepted for Summer Session II or Fall semester enrollment only.  The 2015 application deadline for both summer and fall admission is March 1, 2015.
 
The application process for the MPH degree is a 2-step one.  The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health is participating in SOPHAS (Schools of Public Health Application Service).  MPH applicants must submit a SOPHAS application before submitting a UNC Graduate School application.  You can access this application and view a Getting Started Checklist at the SOPHAS website.

Step 4:
UNC Graduate School application
UNC will send you an email confirming the receipt of your applicant data from SOPHAS.
You will be instructed to log in to complete the UNC Graduate School application through ApplyYourself.
Your ApplyYourself application, with all required documents, must be submitted to the PHLP department in accordance with the instructions from UNC.

Department review
Your complete application will be reviewed by the HC&P admissions committee.
The committee decision will be entered and sent to the UNC Graduate School.

The UNC Graduate School makes final admission decision and notifies applicant via ApplyYourself portal in ConnectCarolina.

Step 1:  Review application instructions
 
Review UNC Graduate School requirements as well as department and HC&P-specific requirements, found on the Graduate Degree Programs page.  Choose “Public Health Leadership” and then scroll down to find the Health Care & Prevention MPH concentration requirements and supplemental information needed.
Admission requirements for the Health Care & Prevention MPH concentration are:
  • You must be a current medical student or have completed medical school in the U.S.
  • Official MCAT scores are required only for current medical students
Step 2:  Review application deadlines
  • Summer Session II enrollment (encouraged):  March 1, 2015 (no applications will be accepted or reviewed after this date)
  • Fall enrollment:  March 1, 2015 (no applications will be accepted or reviewed after this date)
  • Financial aid consideration:*

    • The School of Public Health and the Public Health Leadership Program offer financial assistance, guidance, and awards for financing your education.  To be considered for any financial aid, either merit-related or need-based, all applicants must complete and submit a FAFSA form.  For more information on financial aid, please refer to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.
    • Applying for financial aid is an annual process beginning January 1 for the year of planned enrollment.  The priority FAFSA application deadline to be considered for all types of financial aid is March 1 in the year prior to the fall semester.  For full consideration, please be sure to submit your FAFSA prior to this date!  HC&P applicants for 2015-16 are encouraged to submit their FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, 2015.
    • Admission applications with all required materials received by December 11, 2014 will receive full consideration for financial assistance by the UNC Graduate School.  Applications received after that date will be considered as funds remain available.  Please note that limited Graduate School funding is available for students in the one-year HC&P MPH program.
*UNC medical students can retain their current financial support while enrolled in the School of Public Health.  The FAFSA form must be submitted prior to March 1.  For additional information on financial aid for UNC medical students, please contact Sheila Graham, Financial Aid Officer, UNC School of Medicine, at 919-962-6117 or by email at sheila_graham@med.unc.edu.
Step 3:  SOPHAS application
Begin by reviewing the Getting Started Checklist at the SOPHAS website.  There you’ll find a helpful overview of the application process, including step-by-step instructions and advice to follow both before and as you complete the SOPHAS application.
Complete and submit an online application:
  • Applicants will need an unofficial transcript to enter, as part of the application, each course taken and grade received at all post-secondary institutions of higher learning attended.  Currently enrolled medical students must also enter their medical school courses.
  • Compose your personal statement (no more than two pages) as the “Statement of Purpose and Objectives,” using a text-only word processor (such as Notepad).
  • Upload your resume or CV.
  • Three required letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically by your recommenders.  SOPHAS will email the recommendation/evaluation form to the three individuals whose names and email addresses you’ve entered on your application.  (To avoid SPAM filters, please notify your recommenders that they will receive an email from sophasinfo@sophas.org.)  Your application will not be complete until all required recommendations have been received by SOPHAS.
    IMPORTANT NOTE:  For currently enrolled UNC medical students, one of the three required letters must be from Dr. Georgette Dent, Associate Dean for Student Affairs.  Enter this email address for Dr. Dent:  ann_farabee@med.unc.edu.
  • Enter your AAMC ID if you have taken the MCAT.  (NOTE: official MCAT scores are required only for current medical students, including UNC medical students).  SOPHAS will use your AAMC ID to match your MCAT scores to your application file.  If you do not enter your AAMC ID, SOPHAS cannot send your MCAT scores to your designated schools of public health.
  • Pay a SOPHAS application fee of $120.00.
  • The email address you enter on your application should be one that you check regularly.

Mail the following items to SOPHAS:

  • Official transcripts from each college and university you have attended, including medical school as well as study abroad and non-degree programs.  Current medical students, including UNC medical students, must also submit an official transcript of their medical school work to date.  Do not mail these to UNC.  (Official electronic transcripts emailed directly from the school to SOPHAS are also acceptable.)
    IMPORTANT NOTE:  Currently enrolled UNC medical students must go to the School of Medicine registrar’s office to request that an official transcript be sent directly to SOPHAS.  As part of your request, you must fill out a consent form; also print out the cover letter and sign it to be sent along with your transcript.  If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Ann Farabee, Assistant Registrar, at 919-962-8337 or by email at ann_farabee@med.unc.edu.

Please note that overnight or express delivery will not expedite the processing of your application.
SOPHAS will hold your application until:
  • it is complete and submitted, including coursework details, three letters of recommendation, personal statement, resume, application fee, and
  • official transcripts showing all coursework, including medical school as well as study abroad and non-degree programs, are received by SOPHAS.

When your application is complete and submitted, it will be verified by SOPHAS.

Applicants should check the SOPHAS portal to ensure that all required documents have been received by SOPHAS and that their completed application has been forwarded to the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.  Incomplete applications will NOT be sent to UNC.  They will not be reviewed, nor will you receive information about completing and submitting the required UNC Graduate School application.
 
Step 4:  UNC Graduate School application
When your SOPHAS application has been received by UNC, you will receive an email with instructions for completing the UNC Graduate School application.  Watch for this email and follow the instructions to complete and submit the Graduate School application, including the additional application fee, as soon as possible:
  • Most information will be imported from SOPHAS, including your recommendations and personal statement, but you will be asked to answer some honor code questions and North Carolina residency questions.  All applicants must answer these questions.  You will receive a residency classification with your admission decision.
NOTE:  Currently enrolled UNC medical students classified as NC residents in the School of Medicine who maintain continuous enrollment at UNC will keep their in-state residency status in the UNC Graduate School and the Gillings School of Global Public Health, but they are still required to answer the residency questions on the Graduate School application.
  • Upload copies of your unofficial transcripts.  (Tip:  Upload the same unofficial transcripts used to complete the coursework section in the SOPHAS application.)
NOTE:  Students who are admitted to the UNC Graduate School must have official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended sent directly to the Graduate School prior to the first day of class for the term of their admission.
  • Upload your answer to the HC&P supplemental question as “Supplemental Document #1 Upload”:

Step 5:  Department/concentration review

The Public Health Leadership Program and HC&P admissions committee will review your file and make a recommended admissions decision.  That decision will be sent to the UNC Graduate School for final approval.
Step 6:  UNC Graduate School review and final decision
The UNC Graduate School reviews all admissions decisions made by departments and programs.  When a final decision has been made, the Graduate School will notify you of the decision via an email letter through the ApplyYourself portal in ConnectCarolina.  That letter serves as your official admissions decision.
With the additional steps now required to complete both parts of the application process, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that interested students begin the process and submit their completed applications to SOPHAS as early as possible in order to allow ample time for all steps:
  • As your application will not be considered complete by SOPHAS until three letters of recommendation have been received electronically, please allow your busy recommenders sufficient time to write and return their evaluations to SOPHAS.
  • SOPHAS also needs time to verify the coursework entered on your application by comparison with your official transcripts.
  • To allow ample time for these steps, which occur after your application is submitted and the application fee is paid, we strongly recommend that you submit your application, including the application fee, to SOPHAS no later than January 1, 2015.
