HBHE alum addresses intimate partner violence

| Pamela Frasier, MSPH ’74, PhD ’97, recognized the need for intimate partner violence intervention and prevention as a graduate student at UNC. For her dissertation in Health Behavior and Health Education, Frasier worked with a former physician at UNC to develop a curriculum for addressing intimate partner violence (IPV) issues in women’s visits to a family practice clinic. Her plan was adopted by the Canadian Family Physicians.
In 1999, Frasier was invited by the Surgeon General to address IPV in a national video conference for Healthy People 2000. Over the next several years, Frasier worked on one of the original coordinated community responses to IPV in Chatham County, helped to develop a worksite prevention and intervention program in eastern North Carolina, and served on the Board of Directors in Clinton for their Domestic Violence Shelter. She was also involved in the establishment of the Orange County Family Prevention Center. Now a faculty member in the UNC Department of Family Medicine, Frasier cites her School of Public Health education as a major factor in her success. “As a HBHE alum, I am particularly thankful that I have the community organization skills, the small group facilitation skills, and the strong research skills to inquire, develop, and evaluate demonstration projects that directly address IPV,” Frasier states.
