We are delighted that, after a lengthy national search, the Department has secured a new chair. Edwin B. Fisher, PhD, left his post as head of the Division of Health Behavior Research in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Washington University’s School of Medicine and joined the department as its chair in August 2005.In addition to having led the Division of Health Behavior Research at Washington University, Dr. Fisher was also: professor of Psychology, Medicine and Pediatrics; associate director for Prevention and Control of the Siteman Cancer Center of Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital; and associate director for behavior science and education of Washington University’s Diabetes Research and Training Center, one of six centers funded by the National Institutes of Health. He is also president-elect of the Society of Behavioral Medicine.

Dr. Fisher’s research addresses: health risk reduction (particularly through smoking cessation); management of chronic diseases, including asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes; and psychosocial aspects of cancer. In particular, he is interested in better articulated knowledge of social support, an important but poorly understood factor in health care, prevention, and adjustment to disease.

“The search committee was very dedicated in its mission to attract the best candidates available to apply for the position, and I’m delighted with the fruits of their labor. I feel confident that, with Ed Fisher as chair of HBHE, we will have capable, thoughtful leadership,” said outgoing chair, Jo Anne Earp.
