The Department of Health Behavior and Health Education is pleased to announce the arrival of Dr. Viktoria Doudina, a visiting professor from Russia. Dr. Doudina, an associate professor of sociology at St. Petersburg State University (SPSU), is visiting UNC’s School of Public Health as part of an effort to establish Russia’s first school of public health and to develop an MPH degree program. Over the next few months, she and her colleagues from SPSU will visit a number of U.S. and European schools to collect information that they can use to create their own MPH program. The program they hope to establish will be applied and interdisciplinary in nature; the visiting team will study a variety of concentrations including epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration, social and behavioral science, and environmental science.During her two months as a visiting professor to HBHE, Dr. Doudina will meet with faculty and attend classes in MPH core courses in order to gain exposure to the department and the field. “We look forward to collaborating with Dr. Doudina on this project,” said Jo Anne Earp, HBHE department chair. “The establishment of a formal training program in public health will have long-lasting benefits in Russia. Furthermore, as an academic, her perspective on our program, particularly with regard to global health initiatives, will be invaluable to the school.”Dr. Doudina, who will spend February and March with the department, comes to HBHE through the SPH Office of Global Health and the Fogarty International Center, which fosters partnerships between scientists in the U.S. and abroad. She is joined by another faculty member from SPSU, Dr. Sergei Malov, who will be a Visiting Professor in the Department of Biostatistics.
