Dr. Russ Harris

Russ Harris, MD, MPH, has been awarded UNC’s 15th annual John Atkinson Ferrell Prize and Lectureship. Harris is professor in UNC’s School of Medicine, adjunct professor of epidemiology in UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and director of the public health school’s health care and prevention concentration.

The awardee will deliver a lecture titled “Individual and Population Approaches to Improving the Health of the Public: How Much Do They Disagree?” on May 12 at 3:30 p.m. at the Carolina Club, in UNC’s George Watts Hill Alumni Center. The event is hosted by the UNC Preventive Medicine Residency.

“Dr. Harris is a national expert in cancer screening, clinical preventive services and teaching population health in medical schools. He is also a mentor and an inspiration to the UNC students and residents with whom he interacts every day, whose perspectives and careers have undoubtedly been shaped by his teaching,” said Deborah Porterfield, MD, MPH, director of the Residency.

John Ferrell, who received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Carolina during the early 1900s, had a distinguished public health career. The prize and lectureship have been endowed with a trust from Ferrell’s estate and that of his daughter.
