William G. Gray, PhD, professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health, will present the 2010 Langbein Lecture at the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) fall meeting in San Francisco on Tuesday, Dec. 14. The Walter B. Langbein Lectureship is awarded for lifetime contributions to the basic science of hydrology and/or unselfish service promoting cooperation in hydrologic research. Additional considerations may be the candidate’s renown as a lecturer and/or as an educator. The lectureship is one of AGU’s series of Bowie Lectures, established to honor Walter B. Langbein (1907-1982), who was an innovator and leader in every subject in surface water hydrology.
Gray’s lecture is titled, “Opportunities for Impacting the Trajectory of Hydrologic Model Development.”
AGU officials said Gray is a fitting recipient of the award because of his outstanding contributions to groundwater hydrology and, specifically, to the physics of flow in porous media, as well as multiphase flow and salt water intrusion.
“This award is a well-deserved honor that recognizes Professor Gray’s substantial contributions to the theory and mathematical modeling of hydrology,” said Michael Aitken, PhD, professor and chair of the UNC public health school’s department of environmental sciences and engineering. “As pointed out by the selection committee, Bill is a dedicated teacher who has a knack for making complex concepts accessible to students.”
In choosing Gray for the award, the Langbein Committee cited not only his substantial research contributions, but also his extensive service to the community and his work as adviser, editor and teacher.
More information on Gray’s research is available online.
