Shoshana Goldberg

Shoshana Goldberg, second-year Master of Public Health student in maternal and child health at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been selected as an American Public Health Association (APHA) student fellow for 2011-2012.

Goldberg is one of 12 students from across the country who will serve as fellows in the Maternal and Child Health Section, one of 27 primary APHA units that represent major public health disciplines or public health programs. Established in 1921, the section contributes to policy development in adolescent health, child advocacy, injury prevention, family violence and perinatal care.

The Student Fellows Program in maternal and child health fosters the development of leaders in science, program and policy related to the health of women, children and families. The fellowship allows students to enrich professional experience by participating in professional education and policy development at a national level. As part of the fellowship, Goldberg will receive funds to travel to the 2011 APHA conference, where she will attend a number of training sessions and meetings and begin working with a mentor from the maternal and child health section.

She says she is “thrilled” to have been selected and is excited to attend her first conference, where she hopes to “get a taste of the sort of work I plan to be involved with throughout my career. Upon completion of my master’s degree, I hope to pursue a doctorate in maternal and child health (with an emphasis on domestic adolescent sexual health research), so I’m looking forward to the opportunities presented by the fellowship to connect with students, professors and professionals who will be my future colleagues.”

“I am very pleased that Shoshana has received this important and well-deserved leadership opportunity, said Carolyn Tucker Halpern, PhD, professor of maternal and child health at UNC and Goldberg’s adviser. “She is among the most enthusiastic and motivated students I have met, and has the makings of a strong researcher and advocate for the maternal and child population.”

The American Public Health Association is the oldest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world and has been working to improve public health since 1872.
