On October 24th, 2009, Chapel Hill participated in the 4th annual GuluWalk, a fundraising event aimed to promote the creation of opportunities for children in northern Uganda suffering at the hands of the Lord’s Resistance Army. About 30 students participated in this year’s walk, sponsored by GlobeMed-UNC, making it the most successful walk to date. Students marched from the Pit, a recognized campus center, and through the campus for the two-hour event. Since its beginning in 2005, over 70 cities internationally have committed to the annual GuluWalk, helping to raise over a million dollars and inspiring thousands. Money raised by the 2009 walk will fund the building of the Gulu Youth Cultural Center, a community haven aimed at conserving the rich culture of the Acholi tribe in an effort to promote social cohesion in the region. In addition to arts and cultural programming, the center will sponsor youth leadership training, rehabilitation and rebuilding service. GlobeMed-UNC, a partner of Health Alert-Uganda, is an organization focused on pediatric HIV/AIDS. GuluWalk is just one of the many events GlobeMed sponsors to raise awareness and money for creating health and sustainable communities international.
