Barbara Rimer, DrPH, MPH

Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor

In 2012, President Obama appointed Dr. Rimer Chairman of the President’s Cancer Panel, a three-member panel which monitors the execution of activities of the National Cancer Program. The panel, established as part of the National Cancer Act by President Nixon in 1971, meets at least four times a year and reports directly to the President on barriers to program implementation and success. Dr. Rimer also serves as Vice-Chair for the Task Force on Community Preventive Services at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Rimer is a member of UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and served as its Deputy Director for several years until she was appointed dean. Prior to coming to UNC, Dr. Rimer spent five years as Director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. She is also a former director of Cancer Control Research and Professor of Community and Family Medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine.

Dr. Rimer was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2008 and was the first woman and behavioral scientist to chair the National Cancer Institute’s National Cancer Advisory Board. She is a recipient of both the Director’s Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Cancer Society’s Distinguished Service Award. She is the author of over 265 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Rimer earned both her Bachelor of Arts in English and Masters of Public Health from the University of Michigan, and her doctorate of public health (Dr. PH) from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
