Information for BSPH majors in Environmental Health Sciences

BSPH HANDBOOK

The BSPH Handbook is an important resource for ensuring your success in the Environmental Health Sciences major. It is a source of information for all students. It covers major policies and procedures within Department of Environmental Sciences & Engineering and the Gillings School of Global Public Health. It is a “how-to / where-to,” go-to guide, designed to answer many of your questions about getting things done while you are a student here. We hope you will use and benefit from the handbook. You can find the BSPH Handbook here.

FORMS

Current Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) students can find most of their forms on the BSPH Sakai site. The Gillings School’s Student Affairs Office has a range of resources for BSPH students (including course exemptions, course underload/overload forms, and so on).

COURSE PLANNING

BSPH students should use Tar Heel Tracker for their course planning needs. Tar Heel Tracker can be accessed in ConnectCarolina (under “Academics,” from the drop-down menu select Tar Heel Tracker). Learn how to use this tool.

Assured Enrollment students and Pre-ENHS students are encourage to work with the ESE Academic Coordinator using this Pre-Requisites Course Planning Worksheet.

INDEPENDENT STUDY LEARNING CONTRACTS

All students undertaking an independent study or practicum must complete this departmental Learning Contract. Students should submit the completed contract to ESE Student Services via this portal before the end of the second week of class.

We are committed to addressing issues in a fair, timely and professional manner. We know it will not be possible in some cases, but to help us achieve the best outcome, we ask students to follow these 5 steps whenever possible.

BSPH AMBASSADORS

Feel free to get in touch with one of our Environmental Health Sciences Ambassadors. These students are happy to answer questions you may have about the application process, the program, or student life in the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Bachelor’s-to-Master’s programs

Bachelor’s students at UNC-Chapel Hill can apply to our bachelor’s-to-master’s program for a Master of Public Health (MPH), a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) or a Master of Science (MS) degree. Some students with sufficient course credits in their senior year may be able to complete the graduate degree in one year beyond their undergraduate studies. Details can be found here.

Minor in Engineering for Environmental Change, Climate and Health

BSPH majors can also receive a minor in “Engineering for Environmental Change, Climate and Health,” which would require additional coursework. Students who are considering this should consult with their Academic Coordinator (ESEStudentServices@unc.edu) or the BSPH Program Director, Dr. Amanda Northcross, amandaln@email.unc.edu.

Research and Honors

Many BSPH students have done research in the past, though it is not required. The Office of Undergraduate Research is a good place to start, and students should talk to their academic advisor as well. Ultimately, it is up to the student to discuss research opportunities with faculty.

Many students in the BSPH program have also successfully completed honors theses. Interested students should investigate this with Honors Carolina and as early as possible in their program with a prospective advisor. The current ESE Guidelines can be found in the BSPH Handbook.
