On Friday, October, 23, 2009, Dr. Felicia Mebane, Assistant Dean for Students, welcomed nearly 180 eager prospective students to the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Mebane and other faculty, staff and students shared an overview of the school and departments and invited to them take full advantage of the resources, faculty and staff lined up for the day’s sessions. Next, an Information Fair gave prospective students an opportunity to meet representatives from each department and several of our certificate programs. More faculty, staff and students helped prospective students explore and refine their interests and connect with their programs. Representatives from the university’s Office of Scholarships and Student Aid and the Health Sciences Library also answered questions. Prospective students were treated to a delicious lunch from Amantes Gourmet Pizza.
Prospective students then attended individual sessions hosted by the departments. These sessions highlighted each department’s unique opportunities, admissions requirements, course offerings and faculty support. The day ended with a Minority Student Mixer, sponsored by the Minority Student Caucus and the School’s Office of Student Affairs. This event was held at Café Beyond, a popular restaurant and bar on East Franklin Street that supports minority students and professionals. A couple of the School’s programs participated in the School-wide event and provided their own opportunities for prospective students. For example, also on Friday, the Department of Nutrition hosted sessions for prospective students with an interest in their MPH program. Similarly, the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education held their Applicant Information Day on November 2, 2009. |
