The Carolina Center for Public Service is accepting applications for the Faculty Engaged Scholars Program. At least five faculty members from UNC Chapel Hill will be selected to participate in the two-year program that aims to advance faculty participation in engaged scholarship.

Scholars will receive funds of up to $5,000 per year to support their work for each of the two years ($10,000 maximum). In the first year, scholars take part in an experiential advanced curriculum on engaged scholarship as they work on their own projects in partnership with the community. In the second year, scholars participate in a learning community that focuses on their own efforts and also are asked to produce a product from their scholarship for dissemination.

This year’s scholars will be the third class since the program began in 2007. Giselle Corbie-Smith, associate professor of epidemiology in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and associate professor of social medicine in the School of Medicine, was one of the scholars chosen last year.

Tenure-track faculty members with any length of service at UNC-Chapel Hill and fixed-term faculty members who have been at Carolina for at least five years will receive priority for participation. Those who demonstrate interest and/or experience in applying their scholarship to addressing practical of the state, with the potential to establish long-term benefits to North Carolinians, will receive preference in the selection.

Particular consideration will be given to applicants working in (or interested in working in) the Community Campus Partnership counties of Caswell and/or Lenoir. In addition to the usual scholar funding, there may be additional opportunities for funds for projects in these counties.
