University Day

October 12, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

University Day is an occasion to remember the University’s past and celebrate its future. The date, October 12, marks the laying of the cornerstone of Old East, the institution’s first building and the oldest state university building in the nation.

This year’s theme is service to the state of North Carolina. The program will highlight how this service is integral to everything the University does: from hurricane relief to rural health care, from service projects to economic development. The ceremony will also commemorate another significant event: the 200th anniversary of town government in Chapel Hill.

This year’s ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in Memorial Hall. Three speakers will give brief remarks:

  • Rick Luettich, professor and director, UNC Institute of Marine Sciences;
  • Bernard Bell, executive director, Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship; and
  • Anita Brown-Graham, professor and director, ncIMPACT.

Another highlight of University Day will be the presentation of Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards, a practice begun by the faculty in 1971 to recognize Tar Heels who have made outstanding contributions to humanity. This year’s recipients are:

  • James E. Delany, commissioner of the Big Ten Conference;
  • Nikole Hannah-Jones, award-winning investigative reporter covering racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine;
  • Jill C. McCorkle, novelist and short-story writer; and
  • Robert D. Newman, president and director, National Humanities Center.

Additionally, the Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award, established by the Faculty Council in 2011 to recognize outstanding service by faculty members, will be presented to Giselle Corbie-Smith, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Social Medicine, director of the Center for Health Equity Research and professor of Internal Medicine in the UNC School of Medicine.
