The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering welcomes a new faculty member, Assistant Professor William Vizuete, Ph.D. in July 2005. Dr. Vizuete has a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, a Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas-Austin, and completed his PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Texas-Austin in May 2005. His dissertation involved conducting research and modeling atmospheric chemistry processes that influence ozone formation at the regional level and the use of these models in policy-making for the attainment of ozone standards. He has co-authored several refereed publications based upon his dissertation research and has other manuscripts nearing submission for peer review. Dr. Vizuete worked for ExxonMobil for two years as a process engineer where his duties involved improving day-to-day unit operations, analyzing deviations from desired performance, developing capital projects to solve operating problems or to enhance operating efficiency, and working on an expansion project that generated $1.5 million a year in sales. His research interests include modeling air quality, both outdoor and indoor, and in linking regional and global air quality models. Dr. Vizuete will be actively involved in teaching existing and potentially new courses dealing with environmental engineering and modeling, environmental transport phenomena and modeling atmospheric chemical processes. Dr. Vizuete’s academic training and experience is in chemical engineering, which is noted for its emphasis on fundamental principles and quantitative analysis.

He is member of the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, American Association for Aerosol Research and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a volunteer GEM speaker – Recruit Minorities to Graduate School.
