ESE Students participate in NC Big Sweep 2006
ENVRSO president, Robin Bolte, organized a group of ESE students to participate in the 19th annual NC Big Sweep 2006 in Orange County on Saturday, November 4th. NC Big Sweep is a nonprofit organization whose goal is litter-free watersheds. Volunteers from all 100 counties in North Carolina and approximately 90 countries worldwide come together to clean up bodies of water to improve the environment. ESE student volunteers were assigned to clean up a greenway along Bolin Creek at Umstead Park in Chapel Hill. Their assistance helped contribute to the amazing 5,600 pound total collected during the event. In all, volunteers picked up bottles, cans, tires, fast food containers and wrappers, cigarette butts, two washing machines, car parts, a very waterlogged laptop computer and construction debris from 15.8 miles along Chapel Hill greenways, streams, and roads. The following students participated in the event, and represented UNC well: Robin Bolte Visit NC Big Sweep’s website (http://www.ncbigsweep.org/) to learn more about their cleanup and educational efforts. |
