EPA Presents Plaque to Honor Don Fox

| The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Director of Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, Steve Page, and his colleagues Tom Helms and Bill Johnson, interrupted a faculty meeting on Friday, February 24, 2006 to present a surprised Professor Donald L. Fox with a plaque to express their appreciation for his outstanding leadership of the Reactivity Research Working Group (RRWG). In 1999, Fox accepted the position of chairman of EPA’s newly formed RRWG whose goal is the study and advancement of policy relevant science related to ozone control. EPA needed someone who had the scientific knowledge to lead highly technical discussions and to deal on an equal basis with some of the leading atmospheric scientist in the world. At the same time, the individual had to possess diplomatic and leadership skills to balance the competing interest of participants who were approaching the discussion with considerably different interests and points of view and not show undue favoritism to any faction. They found that in Don Fox. While Chair, Fox gained the respect and admiration of all the parties participating in the working group. He did an excellent job of summarizing the different points of views presented at the meetings and in encouraging the group to make progress in understanding the science involved and has done this with an even-handedness that has left all the participants convinced that they have received a fair hearing for their ideas.EPA commended Fox for his service and offers their gratitude for the leadership he has so generously provided in promoting increased understanding of the science of atmospheric ozone formation and control through RRWG. The considerable accomplishments of the RRWG are a testimony to his leadership.
