Endeavors highlights work of Van Rie, student photographers

The current issue of Endeavors magazine features the work of a faculty member and two students at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
“Return of the Fatal Cough” describes the resurgence of tuberculosis and the research of Annelies Van Rie, MD, PhD, associate professor of epidemiology: TB is now the leading cause of death in people with HIV, and the two diseases have created what Van Rie calls a deadly symbiosis. She treats TB patients in South Africa, which accounts for 29 percent of the continent’s coinfections. “HIV drives the TB epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa,” Van Rie says. “So if you want to do something nowadays about TB there, you can’t neglect HIV.” Endeavors, published three times a year by the UNC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, highlights research and creative activity at UNC. The magazine is available online at http://research.unc.edu/endeavors.
