Dr. Barry Popkin apointed W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professorship
Barry Popkin will be appointed as a W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor, effective July 1, 2011. Barry has been a Professor in the Department of Nutrition since 1977. He is a renowned scholar and a leader in both US and international nutrition research. His work has made a difference in how scientists and policy makers think about problems in nutrition. Barry’s research focuses on changes in diet, physical activity and inactivity, and body composition. His work has included detailed longitudinal studies that he directs in China and Russia, and involvement with longitudinal studies in the Philippines, as well as related work in Brazil and several other countries. He has headed environmental components of large US longitudinal surveys and been involved in extensive research on dietary patterns and trends in the US. He has been principal investor of grants from major government sources such as the National Institutes of Health that total over $60 million. He has over 300 publications, and his work has been cited over 7,000 times. He has trained dozens of students and he and his students make presentations at scientific meetings around the world.
