The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is pleased to announce Dr. David L. Johnson as the recipient of the ESE Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2005 and featured guest at the Department’s annual Fall Picnic held September 16, 2005. Dr. Johnson is currently Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the College of Public Health and President’s Associates Presidential Professor in the Department of Occupational & Environmental Health at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. He also serves as the Co-Director of the Southwest Center for Public Health Preparedness. Dr. Johnson received his BS in Civil Engineering in 1975 and his MS in Engineering in 1980 from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his PhD in three years in Environmental Sciences and Engineering in 1985 from UNC. Upon receiving his PhD, he returned to the U.S. Army where he served in Europe and the Gulf War until he retired from military service in 1991. He then started his academic career as associate professor at the University of Oklahoma. In his relatively brief academic career he has published 35 papers and 33 abstracts in technical journals and received funding from industry, his state, and the Federal government for over 40 research projects. From 1991 through 2004 he graduated 104 advisees, 89 MS, 10 MPH, and 5 PhD. He has taught seven graduate courses, co-developed a new Master of Public Health curriculum in Bioterrorism Preparedness and a new Graduate Certificate curriculum in Bioterrorism Preparedness, co-authored, developed, and implemented the Industrial Hygiene & Environmental Management multi-disciplinary Masters Degree program, and managed the extensive restructuring of all other departmental academic programs.In 1997 Dr. Johnson became Vice-Chair of the Department; in 2001 Professor and in 2002 Chair of the Department. Along the way he was instrumental in the reauthorization for the PhD in his department, and his example has set the tone for subsequent faculty hires. He was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1998-1999, and again in 2000-2001. In 2001 he received Certification by Eminence from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. In recognition of his many contributions to the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Johnson was named a Presidential Professor by the University of Oklahoma President’s Associates in 2003.

ESE is proud of Dr. Johnson and his accomplishments and is most deserving of this recognition as an ESE Distinguished Alumnus.
