Trinnette Cooper, MPH, CHES, has been hired as coordinator for diversity programs and recruitment in the Gillings School of Global Public Health Office of Student Affairs.

Cooper earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Johnson C. Smith University and a Master of Public Health, with a concentration in health promotion, from Northern Illinois University. This spring, she will complete a doctorate in interdisciplinary leadership studies at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) State University in Greensboro, N.C.As former director of health careers and workforce diversity at the Area L Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in Rocky Mount, N.C., Cooper coordinated continuing education programs for health professionals and directed health careers recruitment, support and retention of underrepresented youth in five rural counties in eastern North Carolina. She also previously served as the first community outreach specialist for UNC’s Program on Ethnicity, Culture and Health Outcomes (ECHO).

Cooper’s expertise in evaluation and tracking systems will be an essential component of the School’s outreach to and recruitment of minority undergraduate, middle-school and high-school students, said Charletta Sims Evans, MEd, assistant dean for student affairs at the Gillings School.

The School has established several “pipeline” programs, designed to enhance educational opportunities for minority and disadvantaged students and encourage them to enter college and careers.

Cooper said that it was important to her, as a public health professional, to recruit and retain diverse and talented students who will be in position to make major contributions to the field. “I look forward to achieving this goal by collaborating with the various diversity initiatives at UNC and beyond,” she said.

“I’m excited to see the growth of our pipeline programs,” Sims Evans said, “and I’m confident those programs will excel with Ms. Cooper as the lead.”
