Chief Medical Officer of Homeland Security to Speak at HPAA Certificate Program Graduation

Dr. Jeffrey W. Runge, the chief medical officer in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will be the guest speaker at the graduation ceremonies for UNC’s School of Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Administration’s certificate programs on Saturday, January 7, 12 noon at the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building, School of Social Work, UNC-Chapel Hill.Prior to being appointed to his position of chief medical officer by the Homeland Security Secretary last July, Dr. Runge was the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS). He has also practiced and taught emergency medicine as assistant chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and he has served as the director of the Carolinas Center for Injury Prevention and Control. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina and his bachelor’s degree from the University of the South in Tennessee.
The certificate programs of the Health Policy and Administration Department include Community Preparedness and Disaster Management (CPDM) and Health Care Management (HCM). The CPDM program prepares emergency services leaders and other health officials to enhance their knowledge of management systems used to combat natural and man-made disasters, including terrorism. The HCM program provides healthcare management training for newly appointed managers. Thirty-three students will be graduating from both programs. Other information: Some graduates of the CPDM program volunteered their time to help with rescue and cleanup efforts after hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma and will be available for interview.
