UNC launches new Institute for Environmental Health Solutions
May 1, 2018 UNC-Chapel Hill has launched the Institute for Environmental Health Solutions, aimed at protecting those who are particularly vulnerable to diseases caused by environmental factors. Dr. Rebecca Fry, Institute director, works with a team of interdisciplinary researchers to translate scientific discoveries into effective, easy-to-apply solutions that improve people's health.
Global study examines relationship of prostate inflammation and prostate cancer
April 30, 2018 Dr. Emma Allott has examined global differences in rates of prostate inflammation and considered how the varying rates of inflammation relate to subsequent risk for prostate cancer. Her study findings were published online April 18 in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
Eight faculty members win Teaching Innovation Awards

Research identifies strategies to reverse obesity’s lingering, pro-cancer effects
April 22, 2018 Research from the lab of Dr. Stephen Hursting aims to reverse obesity-linked biological changes in the body associated with cancer growth. Hursting and several lab colleagues presented their findings at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Holliday, Simms, Samuel-Hodge win Gillings School awards for teaching, mentoring, public health achievement
April 21, 2018 Three faculty members have been selected to win the Gillings School's prestigious awards for teaching, mentorship, research and service. They are Amanda Holliday (the Greenberg Award), Jeffrey Simms (the Larsh Award) and Dr. Carmen Samuel-Hodge (the Barr Award). The winners will be recognized at the School's commencement on May 12.
Ammerman recognized by UNC Center for Public Service for engaged research in NC
April 15, 2018 Dr. Alice Ammerman (first on left) was honored recently with the UNC-Chapel Hill Office of the Provost's Engaged Scholarship Award. Ammerman was recognized for engaged research with the Heart Healthy Lenoir project, a partnership to reduce heart disease in an area of North Carolina often referred to as the ‘stroke belt.’
Pam Haines, former nutrition faculty member, dies at 70
April 13, 2018 Dr. Pamela Sue Haines, nutrition professor at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health for 25 years, died at her home in Hillsborough, N.C., on April 10. She was 70 years old.

March 2, 2018 Four Gillings School faculty members have been named to Clarivate Analytics’ 2017 Highly Cited Researchers list. They are Dr. Ralph Baric (epidemiology), Dr. Noel Brewer (health behavior), Dr. Hans Paerl (environmental sciences and engineering) and Dr. Barry Popkin (nutrition).
Rimer announces Stürmer as new epidemiology chair
December 14, 2017 Dr. Til Stürmer will become chair of the Gillings School's Department of Epidemiology on March 1, 2018, pending necessary approvals, including from the UNC board of trustees. Dean Barbara K. Rimer expressed confidence in Stürmer's deep commitment to assuring that the department remains one of the top programs in the world, and thanked outgoing chair, Dr. Andy Olshan, for 11 years of excellent service.
