Researchers find fewer young people are completing the HPV vaccine series, urge better compliance

May 18, 2018 UNC researchers led by doctoral student Jennifer Spencer have reported in a new study that follow-through on the HPV vaccine – the percentage of those who complete the series within a year of receiving their first dose – has fallen dramatically. The drop is problematic, given that timely completion of the vaccine series protects those who are sexually active from a number of reproductive system cancers, notably cervical and anal cancers. Four UNC Gillings School researchers are among the world's highly cited

March 2, 2018 Four Gillings School faculty members have been named to Clarivate Analytics’ 2017 Highly Cited Researchers list. They are Dr. Ralph Baric (epidemiology), Dr. Noel Brewer (health behavior), Dr. Hans Paerl (environmental sciences and engineering) and Dr. Barry Popkin (nutrition).

Rimer announces Stürmer as new epidemiology chair

December 14, 2017 Dr. Til Stürmer will become chair of the Gillings School's Department of Epidemiology on March 1, 2018, pending necessary approvals, including from the UNC board of trustees. Dean Barbara K. Rimer expressed confidence in Stürmer's deep commitment to assuring that the department remains one of the top programs in the world, and thanked outgoing chair, Dr. Andy Olshan, for 11 years of excellent service.

Gillings School hosts delegation from Cuba

November 30, 2017 On Nov. 17, the Gillings School welcomed First Secretary Miguel Fraga from the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Washington, D.C. Among those who met with him were Julie MacMillan and Drs. Peggy Bentley and Clare Barrington.

Chen, Leos recognized as outstanding social entrepreneurs with Forbes '30 under 30’ award

November 15, 2017 Health behavior doctoral students Liz Chen and Cristina Leos were selected by Forbes magazine's '30 Under 30' program as outstanding social entrepreneurs. They are two of the three co-founders of MyHealthEd, a Chapel Hill, N.C.-based nonprofit organization that uses technology to make health education more accessible for teens.
