The 18th annual Carolina Blood Drive, held June 6 at UNC’s Dean E. Smith Center, yielded 860 useable units of blood, said Katrina Coble of the computer science department, chair of the drive committee. The event, one of the country’s largest blood drives, attracted 784 people, including 139 first-time donors.
“We were able to collect enough to supply nearly 70 percent of the needs for one day of all the hospitals served by the Carolinas Region of the American Red Cross,” Coble said. The region, which conducts the drive with UNC volunteers, helps supply more than 100 hospitals. “Blood collected at the UNC drive was turned into more than 2,580 products that have gone to help sustain the lives of the sick and injured,” according to Jeff Davis of the Carolinas Region. In 18 years the drive has produced approximately 18,000 units of blood, helping to save nearly 50,000 lives in the Triangle area, Coble said. Other UNC committee members this year were Lorri Allison and Shelly Green of employee services; Becky Eatmon of the School of Pharmacy; Deborah Hawkins of public safety; Gwen McIntyre of the School of Medicine; Bob Schreiner of the School of Public Health; Clayton Womble of the Smith Center; and Anne Webb of the School of Nursing. Members from the Red Cross were Davis, Wilma Palmer and Robin Sparrow. # # # For further information please contact Ramona DuBose either by phone at 919-966-7467 or by e-mail at ramona_dubose@unc.edu. |
