Dr. Rich Vinroot Jr.

Kelly B. Browning, member and former president of the School’s Public Health Foundation board, and alumnus Richard Vinroot Jr., MD, MPH, will serve four-year terms on the 160-member board, effective July 1.

The BOV assists the UNC Board of Trustees and Chancellor in a range of activities that help advance the University, including marketing, top student recruitment, government relations and fundraising. Members – who hail from counties across North Carolina, 12 other states, and the District of Columbia – also serve as ambassadors, informing their communities about activities at Carolina and informing the University administration about how Carolina is perceived in their communities.

Browning is executive vice president and chief operating officer of the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), a national health charity headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Institute’s mission is to fund research on the relationship of nutrition, physical activity and weight management to cancer risk; interpret the accumulated scientific literature in the field; and educate people about choices they can make to reduce their chances of developing cancer. It is the largest national cancer charity focusing exclusively on the relationship of nutrition, physical activity and weight management to cancer risk.

Browning and AICR have been longtime friends and supporters of the UNC public health school. AICR established a laboratory wing in the School’s Michael Hooker Research Center and has funded six nutrition postdoctoral fellows and an AICR professorship in the School’s Department of Nutrition, a position currently held by nutrition professor and chair, June Stevens, PhD. The School also worked closely with AICR on the landmark study, “Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer” (2007), available for purchase online.

Browning has served on the School’s Public Health Foundation board since 2001.

Vinroot graduated from the UNC schools of medicine and public health in 2004 and began a residency in emergency medicine at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, serving the city and region when Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005. Subsequently, he served with Doctors Without Borders as clinical supervisor of a tuberculosis prevention and treatment program in Nairobi, Kenya.

As the scheduled keynote speaker at Gillings School of Global Public Health’s annual Fred T. Foard Jr. Memorial Lecture next spring, Vinroot will discuss his experiences in a talk, “A Public Health Physician’s Journey Through Flood, Earthquake and the Wake of War,” on March 31, 2011. (Learn more about the event online.)

Recently returned from Kenya, Vinroot now works as an emergency medicine physician at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation and Ochsner Baptist Medical Center in New Orleans.
